Wilmington Public Schools Give and Take

Dear Wilmington Community:

The Wilmington School Business Partnership is a collaborative effort by local business, community agencies, and the school system to establish a cooperative, mutually beneficial, long-term relationship.

In an effort to enable the community and businesses within the Wilmington community to assist the schools, this exchange was developed with the intent of providing a forum where goods and services can be requested or offered.  Listed below are items specifically requested by teachers and staff at our schools.

If you want to offer a tax-deductible good or service or if you are part of the Wilmington School District and want to request a good or service, email Krista Anderson at Krista.anderson@wilmington.k12.ma.us. We thank you for your participation and your efforts to continually improve our schools.

Sincerely,

Wilmington School Business Partnership

Library Aides Wanted
Library /HS
Description of request:  Anyone who can continually volunteer for one day or more a week is welcome in the HS library.

Read-A-Thon Sponsor
Middle School
Description of request:  The middle school would like to run a Read-a-thon in which students are required to read a certain amount of books and are rewarded at the end of the year for achieving a reading goal.   We are looking for sponsors to provide a reward for students who reach the goal.  For example, one reward that worked well in another school was a field trip to Boston to take the Duck Tour with the approximate cost of $30 per achiever.  This is an excellent way to promote reading. It shows that the school and the community are serious about reading.  We can pick a cheaper rein forcer of course but we like the idea of a community promoting an ongoing project.

Cooking Classes Sponsor
Middle School
Description of request: International Hostels offer cooking classes after schools and they focus on teaching children to cook foods from other nations. They teach about how food preparation is influenced by a variety of cultural factors. This is a ten week after school program.  We welcome anyone who wants to sponsor this endeavor (approximately $1000.00).

Photography Club Volunteer and Photography Equipment
Middle School
Description of request: We would love to have a community member help run a photography club after school. The club would run for about 8 weeks and focus on how to handle a camera and on themes such as “Your Community”.  There are many ways to run the club and the CORI checked volunteer will work with the Middle School Administration to develop an outline for the program.  The students will all have an inexpensive digital camera which they either buy themselves or are provided by a donation or sponsor - donations welcome!

Game Club Volunteers and Games
Middle School
Description of request: Kids really enjoy Game Clubs. This is a time after school where kids play games for an hour or so after school. We are looking for a selection of appropriate games and a CORI checked volunteer to monitor/supervise the club for 6-10 weeks, 1 hour a week.

Girls Writes Club Volunteer and Sponsor
Middle School
Description of request: We would like to start a Girls” Writers Club. The club will focus on writing for each other and getting others to critique their work. Sometimes the goals can be to submit for publication. There is a local Teen Girls” Writers newspaper that we would need a subscription to –about $30 a year. Also, we would need to a willing CORI checked volunteer instructor with writing experience to run this club.  There is also the potential to continue this throughout the year because the writers “bond” with each other. This has the potential to be a terrific “outlet” for eighth grade girls especially.

Stock Market Game Club Volunteer and Sponsor
Middle School
Description of request: We would like to start an after school club to play the Boston Globe sponsored Stock Market game. There is a $20 fee per team to join and a school can have as many teams as they want for the ten week competition. This is a great opportunity for a financial services person who wants to volunteer with kids after school. The games typically last about ten weeks. The competition is in the spring. All volunteers need to be CORI checked.
